Downtown Frankfort Saves Its Holiday Season for One Friday Night and the Saturday After

Downtown Frankfort's 2026 holiday calendar has one opening date and one peak. The Village lights Breidert Green on Thursday, Dec. 3. The busiest part of the season comes eight days later, in about 23 hours. It starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, when the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce's Midnight Madness keeps shops open late. It ends at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, when children carrying lanterns reach the Green for cocoa and a fire. Plan the weekend as one long visit and you'll catch nearly everything downtown offers this December.

Dec. 3 lights the Green, and Oak Street keeps the next week busy

The Village of Frankfort lists Lighting of the Green for Thursday, Dec. 3, 2026. Check that page for the ceremony time before you head out. The lighting starts the season. It doesn't do much to fill the week that follows.

The Frankfort Park District does most of the scheduling between the lighting and the big weekend. Its events are at Founders Community Center, 140 Oak Street, and the Park District's special events page lists the season in order:

  • Santa's mailbox is at Founders Community Center starting Nov. 17. Letters are due Tuesday, Dec. 1, by 4 p.m., and the Park District limits it to residents of the district.
  • Candy Bar Bingo for ages 4 to 13 runs Monday, Nov. 23, from 11 a.m. to noon.
  • Santa Photos & Workshop is Saturday, Dec. 5, with sessions from 11 to 11:45 a.m. and noon to 12:45 p.m.
  • The Polar Express Storytime Train leaves Sunday, Dec. 6, at 9:30 and 11:45 a.m. It departs from the Hickory Creek Metra Station in Mokena, not from Frankfort.
  • Holiday Cards for Seniors are due at Founders Community Center on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
  • Puzzle Mania, Holiday Edition runs Friday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The last item is the one to plan around. Puzzle Mania starts at 6 p.m. on Dec. 11, the same minute downtown's late shopping night begins.

Friday, Dec. 11: the shops stay open until midnight

The Frankfort Chamber of Commerce lists Midnight Madness for Friday, Dec. 11, 2026, as its late holiday shopping night. The Chamber says more than 30 area businesses usually take part. The event listing runs from 6 p.m. to midnight, with shopping, local businesses and festive activities.

Midnight Madness is the only Chamber holiday shopping event on its 2026 community calendar, so it carries the downtown shopping side of the season. Puzzle Mania overlaps it on Oak Street from 6 to 9 p.m., so a household can split up early on Friday and meet downtown for the last few hours before midnight.

Saturday, Dec. 12: the Village takes over Breidert Green

Saturday picks up where Friday stops. On the Village's own calendar, the Dec. 12 event at Breidert Green is called Holiday on the Green. Visit Chicago Southland lists the same day as Home for the Holidays. It's a free, family-friendly celebration from noon to 5 p.m., with real reindeer, Santa and Mrs. Claus, strolling carolers, live music, a trackless train and horse-drawn wagon rides.

The 2025 edition ran on two days, Dec. 13 and 14, from noon to 5 p.m. each day. Patch reported that Saturday had the reindeer, Santa, carriage rides and lantern parade, while Sunday had holiday performances on the Breidert Green stage. The Village's 2026 listing names only Saturday, Dec. 12, so that's the day to plan around.

The last hour of Saturday belongs to the Frankfort Area Historical Society. Its Holiday Lantern Parade runs from 4 to 5 p.m. Children meet at the museum at 132 Kansas Street, collect a free glowing lantern and walk through Historic Frankfort to Breidert Green for cocoa, cookies and a warm fire.

Here's the whole stretch in order:

When What Where Run by
Fri., Dec. 11, 6 to 9 p.m. Puzzle Mania, Holiday Edition Founders Community Center, 140 Oak St. Frankfort Park District
Fri., Dec. 11, 6 p.m. to midnight Midnight Madness late shopping Participating Frankfort businesses Frankfort Chamber of Commerce
Sat., Dec. 12, noon to 5 p.m. Reindeer, Santa and Mrs. Claus, carolers, live music, trackless train, wagon rides Downtown and Breidert Green Village of Frankfort
Sat., Dec. 12, 4 to 5 p.m. Holiday Lantern Parade 132 Kansas St. to Breidert Green Frankfort Area Historical Society

Four organizations put on these events, and their schedules barely overlap.

The Trolley Barn gets its next tenant the same month

A few doors down White Street, the Trolley Barn at 11 S. White St. has a new restaurant coming as the season peaks. In July, Patch reported that the Frankfort Village Board approved a special use permit for Avocado Theory. Board documents described no major changes to the existing space and seating inside the enclosed patio. The restaurant's events page now lists the downtown Frankfort opening for December 2026, with the exact date still to come.

WhatNow Chicago reported that this is owner Krunal Patel's fifth location, after Tinley Park, Naperville, Lincolnshire and Wheaton. Its main menus include a "Power Morning" lineup of breakfast sandwiches, pancakes and wraps, plus avocado toasts in flavors like tomato basil and smoked salmon dill, and the menus change by season. Patel told the outlet he got to know the village by selling at its farmers markets. "I thought, man, this is such a great community," he said.

That farmers market link ties the restaurant to this part of downtown. In 2023, Patch reported that the Frankfort Country Market ran on Sundays at Breidert Green and the parking lots at 1 N. White St. The 2026 season ran from April 26 to Oct. 25 with close to 60 vendors a week. The market brings weekend crowds downtown from spring through October. The December events are the main draw after it closes.

The building has been through bigger changes before. According to Patch's history of the Trolley Barn, trolley tracks ran along Kansas Street from 1908 to 1922 and reached Chicago Heights by 1909. After the interurban line shut down in 1922, Frankfort businessman Art Bauch used the building for tractor and car sales. Cooper-Show Ford took over in the 1950s and stayed about 30 years. The building then sat empty for years. New owners bought it in 1996, planned an indoor mall for antiques and specialty shops, and sold it in 2003.

The most recent big change came in 2024. Patch reported that KidsWork Children's Museum, a Trolley Barn tenant since 2007, planned to close its Frankfort location on Aug. 11 that year and move to New Lenox. A breakfast-focused restaurant brings the building a different kind of customer, and it arrives in the busiest month of the downtown year.

A one-weekend plan for Dec. 11 and 12

  1. Friday, 6 p.m. Drop the puzzlers at Founders Community Center for Puzzle Mania, which ends at 9.
  2. Friday evening into the late hours. Walk the Midnight Madness shops, which stay open until midnight.
  3. Saturday, noon. Head to Breidert Green for the reindeer, Santa and Mrs. Claus, the trackless train and the wagon rides while the lines are short.
  4. Saturday, a little before 4 p.m. Bring the kids to the Historical Society museum at 132 Kansas Street to pick up lanterns.
  5. Saturday, 4 to 5 p.m. Walk with the parade back to the Green for cocoa, cookies and the fire.
